DATEN Football Club emerged victorious in the Cheshire Football League Division Two Cup Final.

They defeated Crewe FC 1-0 in a close game at the Victoria Stadium in Northwich, ending a 22-year wait for a Daten trophy.

Crewe initially took the game to Daten in a first half in which they had the better of the play.

But Daten stood firm in defence, with captain Ronnie Green making a couple of saving takles and keeper Stuart Kirby having to deal with a number of corners and crosses.

Crewe’s PJ Hudson stood out with his speed and invention but could not provide a breakthrough.

After 25 minutes Daten’s Scott Swales broke through the Crewe defence but that brought the best out of Crewe keeper Karl Parker, who saved as the forward attempted to go around him.

The second half started better for Daten and the introduction of Kevin Hammond and Alex Connally turned the game in Daten’s favour as they started to impose their brand of football.

Swales, Fletcher and Connally all brought saves from Parker.

Man of the match Ryan Taylor became a constant threat by supplying a number of inviting crosses for the Daten forwards and Jeff Bell almost got the breakthrough when his far-post header came off the crossbar.

Then a breakaway by Crewe was only stopped by a goal-line headed clearance from Craig Brighton.

The only goal came 10 minutes from time when Craig Brighton was upended in the penalty area and Kevin Hammond calmly dispatched the penalty as others could barely watch.

Crewe attempted to mount a final onslaught for an equaliser but Daten stood firm.
