WARRINGTON Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said a lot of pluses came out of his team’s impressive victory over Huddersfield Giants.

He was full of praise for each player he was questioned about in the post-match Press conference but felt Chris Bridge and Vinnie Anderson had produced their best performances so far under Smith’s reign.

Chris Riley, Chris Hicks, Lee Briers, Michael Monaghan, Adrian Morley, Garreth Carvell and Ben Westwood also received plaudits.

Smith concluded: “There’s a lot of big ticks for us.”

He added: “A lot of people should have gained a lot of confidence out of their performances today.

“I’m really happy with the way the players are working off the field and the coaching staff have been outstanding with the players lately.

“I can’t say enough about the efforts being put in off the field and that’s coming to fruition on the field so as long as we keep doing that we’ll be okay.”

Smith felt his pack of forwards did their business well to get the team off to a strong start, supported by some ‘classy backs’.

“We played some good stuff again,” he said, referring to following on from the previous week’s 58-22 success at Bradford Bulls.

“We played some attractive rugby league and put out some nice tries and some good skill.

“You hope that you can carry on from where you left off the week before but rarely does that happen.

“I’m pleased for the players. It gives them a little bit of confidence in what we’re doing here and the way we’re going about things.

“I think Huddersfield have got a decent pack of forwards and they’ve been intimidating to a lot of teams this year so we knew we had to shape up.

“I thought our pack was very good, led up front by the big boys in Mozza and Carvell but well supported by a lot of others. Westwood was good again and that’s the strongest game I’ve seen from Vinnie Anderson since I’ve been here. He was very good and supported well by some classy backs.

“Riley’s been sharp, full of energy and life and adds some spark to us.

“He had a couple of opportunities and created another nice try for himself.

“I’m pleased. It’s amazing what a little competition for spots can do as well. That’s what we’ve got there. We’ve got Richard Mathers in the background ready to go if necessary but Chris has come up well so far.

“Chris Bridge was outstanding and looked really sharp. That’s another best performance since I’ve been here.

“I think we’ve all seen what a talent Chris can be and what he’s capable of. We just need some consistency from him and he’s starting to find that so I’m delighted for him. Hopefully he’ll go on from that.

“Chris Hicks is scoring a few tries and is kicking a whole lot better at the moment. He’s just extended his contract so it shows we’re doing some things right both on and off the field.”

And he pointed out the improvement in the team’s defence.

“I felt with the ball we were pretty solid. There was a five or 10-minute period just before half time where I thought we tried to push it a bit too much to score, whereas before that we were quite patient and we came up with some good options.

“We were pretty good defending and that’s an area that we needed to improve on big time. I just felt we were a lot more composed in our own area.

“I think our structure is a whole lot better in defence at the moment.

“We’re feeling more confident. Besides from a try off an error from a kick in the first half, I can’t really remember Huddersfield breaking us in the first half.

“A couple of little blemishes occurred just after half time where Crabtree came up with about 400 offloads on us just after half time hurt us for a while but I thought we were pretty solid defensively.

“I’m delighted with that aspect of our game. We needed to improve and it has been.”
