A FORMER Warrington Wizards trio are settling into their new lives in Australia.

Forwards Matt Wilson and Jono Smith, along with centre Danny Shaw, moved Down Under in January after signing up with Gympie Devils in the Sunshine Coast Rugby League competition.

Gympie club stalwart Bob Leitch said: “All are fitting in very well, with Matt being a little bit older and an experienced footy player he is acting as a mentor for his fellow Poms and also to the local boys!

“Jono is a bit of a larrikin and Danny has taken on the role of social director”

'The players are enjoying their company, and this has seen a significant rise in the club spirit!

“The Pommy boys have been working on their tans and had a great time at the footy last weekend “We have bacon butties after training, not sausage sizzle - apparently an English tradition.”

All three started the trial game against the Brisbane Broncos Toyota Cup side, Shaw and Wilson showing they lack nothing in the defensive department, with Wilson throwing in some rattling hits.

Smith impressed with the ball in hand, also scoring the side’s only try in a gutsy defeat against a very talented side.

Smith and Shaw continued to impress in there other trial games, both crossing the whitewash on a few occasions.

Unfortunately for Wilson, he missed the rest of the trial games after a shoulder injury in his second pre-season outing.

The competition started with a lot of hype building around the Devils’ chances, with their influx of new talent.

Gympie got off to a great start, winning their opening game 38-16.

Wilson, in his comeback game starting in the front row, and Shaw, starting in the centre, both impressed as did Smith, who got over for two tries late on, one on the back of a Wilson break and the other on the back of one from Shaw.

It promises to be a good year for Devils and for the English boys, too.
