TOWN boss Joey Dunn was more relieved than happy after his side’s Unibond First Division North survival was confirmed on Tuesday night.

Even though Yellows were not in action, defeats for relegation rivals Salford City and Rossendale United means a 19th place finish is now confirmed.

The battle to avoid the single relegation spot on the final day of the season is now only between Salford and Rossendale, while Town have nothing but pride to play for at Harrogate Railway, kick off 3pm.

Dunn’s joy at avoiding the drop was tempered by his side’s failure to secure safety themselves, throwing away a 2-1 lead to lose 4-2 against Radcliffe Borough on Saturday when a win would have done the job.

He said: “It was a relief to get over the line because it’s been a difficult couple of weeks.

“The Radcliffe game was indicative of a couple of games we have lost this season, where we’ve taken the lead and looked comfortable but then thrown it away.

“We need to start converting that kind of position into wins.

“Hopefully the players can now go to Harrogate and play with a bit of freedom and enjoy the game because they’ve been under pressure recently.

“In the context of the club, survival means we can now plan for the future with assurances about our position next season. There is a lot we need to change.”

Warrington Town 2 Radcliffe Borough 4

TOWN failed to secure survival in their final home game of the season after a second-half collapse saw them lose 4-2 to fellow strugglers Radcliffe Borough.

The hosts had been stunned when Borough took the lead three minutes in, Ben Manning given the time and space to fire home from the edge of the box.

But a frantic opening spell saw Warrington respond with two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead within nine minutes.

First, Chris Gahgan fired home a penalty before Thomas Lamb blasted home three minutes later.

But Town were a shadow of themselves after the break and Tom Rutter headed into the net from a corner to level the scores on 57 minutes.

Only two minutes later Radcliffe took the lead when the second penalty of the day was converted by Griff Jones before they sealed victory, substitute Steve Howson finishing with aplomb after being played in behind the defence.
