WARRINGTON’S prestigious junior sevens rugby league competition, the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Challenge Cup, has reached its quarter-finals stage.

The event is a starting place for Wolves’ stars of the future, with current Super League squad member Matty Blythe being a former winner with Beamont Junior School.

More than 40 school teams started out in this year’s traditional competition, previously known as the Miller Sevens, with games played at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Super League match days.

The quarter finals will take place as curtain-raisers to Wolves’ next home clash against Huddersfield Giants on April 26.

Last year’s winners, St Wilfrids, have been knocked out by St Bridgets, who have since fallen themselves to Broomfields.

And Broomfields must now face Beamont, traditionally strong in this event, in one of the eagerly awaited quarter-final ties in an event that is backed by the Warrington Wolves Foundation.

The other quarter-final ties are Cinnamon Brow versus St Oswalds, St Phillips against Dallam and St Benedicts versus St Paul of the Cross.

They will all be bidding for a place in the semi finals on May 16 and the final on June 14.

All referees of the matches are youngsters from Warrington Rugby League Referees Society, while fire cadets, who have a unit based at The Halliwell Jones, also help out on match days.
