Greenalls PSO 5 Whiston Cross Holt 0
GREENALLS Padgate St Oswalds’ Guardian Cup Final success was extra sweet for three men.
One of them was ex-Warrington Town and Tetley Walker centre half Lee Webster, who last appeared in the final in a 3-2 win against Whiston 25 years ago.
He can thank the marksmanship of Rob Hanley and Brendan Hennessey for helping make him a two-times winner of Warrington’s equivalent of the FA Cup.
Hanley bagged a hat-trick and Hennessey chipped in with two as Greenalls pulled away in the second half of the traditional Easter Monday showpiece at Rylands Recreation Ground.
Ian Lomax’s Cheshire Soccer League side did not have things all their own way, though.
After they went 1-0 ahead in the 15th minute thanks to Hanley finishing off Lee Hughes’ length of the field run, there was lots of pressure to absorb.
Greenalls weathered the storm and raised the tempo after the break.
Asserting their authority on the game forced a desperate tackle which resulted in a red card, reducing Whiston to 10 men for the majority of the second half.
It got worse for Whiston, as, from the free kick, Greenalls went forward and Brendan Hennessey worked a one-two to score a decisive second goal.
From that moment there was only going to be one winner.
