SOMEONE seems to have told the fish that British Summer Time arrived last weekend as reports from across all Lymm Angling Club waters show a big upturn in catches.

On Shakerley Mere, Jason Tracey fished an overnight session to land two mirror carp, one weighing in at exactly 24lbs, the other at 25lbs 12ozs.

Other significant captures at the big Cheshire mere include a string of common carp between 12lbs and 18lbs and several bream to 7lbs.

Pleasure anglers are muscling in on the action there, too, with skimmer bream and roach giving double-figure nets.

The Belmont complex has been busy with anglers cashing in on the action. Personal best carp have been caught on almost a daily basis with many fish over 20lbs being landed.

The biggest fish of the week fell to an angler fishing Belmont Pool and tipped the scales at just over 26lbs.

However, Beech Pool has also produced a fish of just below this figure, along with many double-figure specimens.

Head bailiff Jimmy Ashall went out for the first time in more than two months last weekend.

Settling down on Belmont Pool, Jimmy had to wait only 90 seconds after casting in for his alarm to sound, as a good fish quickly devoured his bait.

The culprit was a well conditioned 20lb 8oz mirror carp that set Jimmy on his way to a particularly rewarding session.

Walk Mill Pool is providing some amazing roach and rudd sport, well supported by hard-fighting tench and crucian carp.

Maggot, castor and bread are being devoured as soon as the baits hit the water but bigger baits such as corn are producing better quality roach and rudd to well over 1lb along with the tench and crucian carp.

Currently the fish are fairly tightly shoaled around the island near the entrance but they are slowly spreading out as lilies and reeds start to flourish.

Lymmvale’s form continues to improve week on week.

Tench in excess of 7lbs have fallen to a variety or tactics in bags of up to eight fish and the best carp reported recently was one of more than 27lbs.

Several mid-double figure carp have also been captured along with two over 20lbs.

Whitley Pool and Village Pool are providing excellent action for pleasure anglers. castor or corn fished under a waggler over a sprinkling of pellet are soon bringing fish to the net.

Just a mile or so away, Grimsditch Pool is producing roach and perch in numbers to just under 2lbs, along with tench to 3lbs and the odd bonus carp.

The club’s recent annual meeting was extremely well attended and the committee gratefully received a rousing round of applause from those present for the work they had done in improving the club.

It was announced on the night that I have been appointed club chairman, a position I was truly honoured to accept, and previous chairman Steve Mercer is now club secretary.

The committee thanked Matt Jefferson after he stepped down as club secretary.
