WARRINGTON Wolves will be competing in the Carnegie Floodlit Nines this year.

They will be one of six Super League teams attempting to win the silverware in the one-night tournament at Headingley Stadium on Wednesday, August 26.

Six other senior teams will also take part, while a women's county clash will be played as the curtain-raiser.

Leeds Met Carnegie’s own rugby league team, who this year reached the third round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup for the second successive year, will take part in the tournament alongside Super League clubs Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Hull Kingston Rovers, Leeds Rhinos, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Warrington Wolves.

The other teams taking part in the competition will be the British Army, Cumbria and Jamaica, as well as the winners of both the Cheltenham Nines and the Northern Rail Nines.

Last year, Huddersfield Giants were crowned champions in front of a lively crowd and the teams are now eagerly awaiting the draw.

Two famous number nines, James Lowes and Mick Morgan, will be making the draw at the launch event at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, where club representatives and players will be in attendance. Former Great Britain hooker Lowes was part of the successful Bradford Bulls team of the late 1990s where he won many trophies and was later named in Bradford’s team of the century.

And, of course, he is currently first-team coach at Warrington Wolves.

Morgan was the 1982 Man of Steel and also gained six England caps in a career in which he also represented Wakefield, York, Castleford, Featherstone Rovers and Oldham.

The tournament revives the tradition of the Headingley 7s, which was staged at Headingley between 1965 and 1978, and provided high-energy league action for fans.

Commenting on the launch, Carnegie Nines event director, Lionel Hurst, said: “Huddersfield Giants showed the ultimate respect by selecting a high powered Super League squad in the inaugural Carnegie Floodlit Nines tournament in 2008 when they swept all before them including Hull FC in the final.

"2009 will see some great innovations as the 9s brand continues to flourish.”
