RICHIE Mathers hopes Wolves fans are the forgiving type.

Warrington’s new signing made a positive impression on supporters during a previous loan spell at the club but their most recent memory of him is not as favourable.

The full back was sent off while playing at The Halliwell Jones Stadium last season for former club Wigan after a high tackle on Matt King left the Australian prostrate on the turf.

Mathers showed immediate concern for his opponent and admits the incident has played on his mind since completing a move to Wolves on Monday.

But the 25-year-old hopes the club’s faithful will not hold it against him.

He said: “I’m conscious of it.

“I think I had a good relationship with the fans when I was on loan at the club so I want to win them over again.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot. It was something at the time that was careless but certainly not intentional, I never went out to injure Matt.

“I suppose the first thing I’ll have to do when I meet Matt is to apologise to him. But hopefully it’s something the fans can see was not deliberate.”

Warrington’s fans have left their mark on Mathers.

Despite playing just eight games for Wolves while on loan from Leeds in 2002, the passion on the terraces is something he has never forgotten.

He said: “I’ll have to turn in some good performances to get them behind me and I want to do that.

“I remember playing here for Leeds when Andrew Johns made his debut and the atmosphere was really phenomenal.

“The fans here make a big difference and can give you a massive boost.”
