WARRINGTON Wolves’ England back rower Ben Westwood is planning to be a good boy from now on.

His naughtiness against Catalans Dragons at the end of February, felling Dane Carlaw with a high tackle, led to a five-week suspension before returning in impressive form as a try scorer in the 56-10 defeat of York City Knights at the weekend.

“It was a bit hard being out if I’m honest,” he said.

“It dragged a bit in the last few weeks but it was my own fault.

“I did wrong and I had to pay for it.

“I’ve got to learn. I can’t keep taking people’s heads off.

“Hopefully I can make up for it in games to come.”

Westwood, who revealed that he had worked on his tackling technique going into Saturday’s cup tie, is back on the scene at the right time for Warrington as they go into three games in eight days.

Head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith may need to make good use of as many players as possible against Salford tomorrow, Castleford on Monday and then Bradford next Friday.

In a week when the services of Martin Gleeson have been lost and new boy Richie Mathers is injured, he will be pleased Garreth Carvell (knee) and Jon Clarke (ankle) made successful comebacks along with Westwood at the weekend, while Adrian Morley (rested) and Michael Monaghan (hamstring) are back on board.

“We’re quite healthy as a squad at the minute,” said Westwood.

“Monas (Monaghan) has been out for the last couple of weeks but he’s ready to go again and we just rested him again at the weekend to be sure.

“Everyone’s fighting for positions, which is good, because everyone’s on their toes and will be playing hard to keep their place.”

Westwood is expecting a big test down the middle against a Salford pack that includes former Warrington back rower Rob Parker as club captain, especially with Shaun McRae’s men being cock-a-hoop after their surprise Challenge Cup success at Hull on Sunday and are now hunting their second Super League win of the year.

“I’m sure Salford will be targeting us as a win to get themselves back on track in Super League,” said Westwood.

“It’s going to be tough as they are quite strong down the middle. We’ve got to bear up and match them for strength before hopefully we can get them out wide.”
