‘A job well done.’ That is the way Wolves head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith described Saturday’s 56-10 Carnegie Challenge Cup fourth round win against York City Knights.

“The display was pretty good,” he started off.

“I thought we were great with the ball, very good, very professional. We didn’t make many errors.

“We had a little patch in the second half when we came up with about three errors in a row but with that sort of scoreline I can expect a few errors.

“In the first half, it was unbelievable that our first error did not come until Chris Hicks was trying to put the ball down in the in-goal area with about four minutes to go until half time.

“Until then we hadn’t made a mistake. It was very, very good.

“Defensively, I was a little bit disappointed with a couple of areas of our game in the first half but we lifted it in the second half.

“We had a ‘nil’ scoreline in the second half which showed that we improved defensively. I liked that part of us.

“And we put on some nice tries in the second half, too, so it was a job well done I thought.”

Smith had words of special praise for returning forwards Garreth Carvell and Ben Westwood.

Both had missed the last five Super League matches, Carvell with a knee ligament injury and Westwood with a suspension.

“I thought Carvell and Westwood were both very good,” said Smith.

“For me, they were the two best players on the field.”

As well as Carvell and Westwood returning, Chris Bridge was at stand off for the first time this year, Vinnie Anderson was at right centre for the first time in 2009 and Paul Wood made his first start of the campaign.

“I was pleased with most of the players out there against York.

“We tried a few things and found out a few things about different positions.

“So I’m pretty pleased with the way things went really.”
