SUPPORTERS may have got a glimpse of the way Wolves would move forward without Martin Gleeson when they faced York City Knights in the Carnegie Challenge Cup fourth round on Saturday.

Wolves officials said Gleeson was rested for the tie with York, along with fellow England international Adrian Morley.

But Wigan Warriors are seeking to sign Gleeson and, without him in the side against the National League One side, head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith took a look at New Zealander Vinnie Anderson in the right centre position that has belonged to Gleeson since 2005.

Anderson has not hit into his best form yet this season but Smith said: “We were pleased for Vinnie Anderson today. He came up with a couple of tries.”

The position is not alien to Anderson, who has filled in there for Wolves before and had spells there with St Helens and New Zealand Warriors before moving to The Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2007.

He has mainly held down the loose forward position while with Wolves but Ben Harrison is currently playing well in the role, with Anderson switching to second row for the previous two games.

There is competition for places in the centres, even if Gleeson moves on.

Paul Johnson, Matt King, Simon Grix and Chris Bridge have all played there this season, with Chris Hicks also capable of taking on the role.

Gleeson’s future was the talk of the ground, even though Smith refused to talk about the situation in the post-match Press conference.

Rumours abound that a deal has already been done for the 28-year-old to join Wigan, whose interest was initially being reported at the start of the week although Wolves have neither confirmed or denied that they would be willing to let him go.

Wolves had previously said they would allow Gleeson to opt out of the final year of his contract in 2010 to move to an Australian club but news of any such move has gone quiet.
