RICHARD Egington has become Warrington’s most successful Olympian of all time after taking the silver medal in the men’s eight rowing final.
Egington was the first Warrington-born competitor to represent Great Britain at the Olympics but nine others with Warrington connections have also competed over the years.
Of those nine, Culcheth’s Michelle Probert took bronze as part of the 4x400m relay on the track in Moscow in 1980, while Warrington Boxing Club’s Robin Reid also received the bronze medal in Barcelona in 1992.
Warrington’s other representatives included Egington’s rowing teammate Olivia Whitlam in Beijing, Appleton Rifle Club’s Mike Babb in 2000 and 2004, Warriors of Warrington Swimming Club’s Helen Slatter in 1992 and 1996, Warrington Athletics Club’s Suzanne Rigg in 1996, Daresbury-based boxers Ray and George Gilbody in 1980 and Warrington Athletics Club’s Chris Vose in 1920.
