WARRINGTON RUFC were agonisingly edged out in their latest game on Saturday.

They were beaten by a single point at Southport, with the hosts coming away with a 16-15 victory thanks to a late try from a quickly-taken penalty that caught the visiting defence napping.

Even then, Warrington had the chance to snatch the win but a long-range penalty proved too much for JP Hudson while some frantic late attack was repelled by the home defence.

Before Southport’s winner, two quickfire tries in the second half had seen Warrington come from 11-3 down to lead by four points after their only score of the first period came courtesy of a Hudson penalty.

That was despite them having several try-scoring chances in the opening stages, with Joe Craven having a try ruled out for a forward pass while Ty Hamblett was stopped just two metres short of the line on another attack.

An early try and a brace of kicked penalties had put the hosts in charge but with 15 minutes left, a Hudson break put Harrison Turner over as Warrington finally made pressure count.

Then from the restart, Matt Beeley broke from inside his own half and found the supporting Jamie Hartill to race home from halfway, with Hudson adding the extras.

Unfortunately, however, they were unable to hold on and will now look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Sefton.
