WARRINGTON Town’s run of poor results at home continues following defeat by Alfreton Town at Cantilever Park on Saturday.

Paul Carden’s men were a little unfortunate in that they were undone 1-0 by a deflected goal in the second half, and came close with chances they created in both periods.

So they showed plenty of the resilience that was on display in their National League North midweek draw at Brackley Town, and were better than in the 3-0 loss at home to South Shields last Saturday.

But ultimately they have now only won one of their last nine games at home, in all competitions, losing six of them.

Yellows suffered an early blow, losing Andy White to injury after 10 minutes which handed Bohan Dixon an early chance off the bench.

A couple of good chances did not work out for Town midway through the first half.

From the first real foray in the Alfreton end, Connor Woods pounced on a loose ball in the box and shot at goal but the ball struck a post.

Then Joe Rodwell-Grant turned his man and pushed a ball through for Josh Miles, who cut on to his left and was denied by the keeper's outstretched leg.

Alfreton had their moments in front of goal in the first half, too.

Day looked offside but the flag stayed down and he rifled a shot bound for the near post that was tricky for keeper Dan Atherton and he did well to keep it out.

Then a dangerous delivery from the corner by Whitehouse put the ball on a plate for Day six yards out, but he couldn’t finish it.

Moments later Lund's long throw was headed against the bar by Hunt.

Matty McDonald had an opportunity to break the deadlock in the 60th minute but dragged his shot wide of the far post with the keeper beaten after he had created space for himself in the box from a one-two with Miles.

Fortuitously Alfreton got in front in the 73rd minute when Liam Waldock’s shot took a deflection which Atherton could do nothing about as he had dived the other way to save the initial shot.

Carden bemoans Town's bad luck

The result sees Yellows slip two places to 20th spot, only one point clear of the relegation zone.

And while rueful of the unfortunate way in which the game slipped away from them, Carden admitted they did not do enough at the other end to retrieve the situation.

"We knew the game was going to be that way. Billy (Heath, Alfreton manager) sets his teams up to be strong and relentless with what they do," he said.

"To be fair, we’d handled the throw-ins and the balls into our box, but it’s a weak shot that’s deflected and wrong-footed Dan (Atherton).

"Without us creating a lot, I still felt we tried to get the ball down at times and move it into the right areas for the right people to create.

"We have to learn from things – it’s a really tough league as people know, and we’ve got to make sure we’re grinding results out.

"Tuesday was a good point but like last weekend, it’s disappointment on a Saturday afternoon again which we’ve got to try and change.

"A deflected shot can happen at any time but we just didn’t do enough to work their keeper at the other end."
