WARRINGTON Rylands are through to the next round of the FA Trophy.
They were victorious in a penalty shoot-out in their third qualifying round tie at Stocksbridge Park Steels, triumphing 3-1 on spot-kicks to take their place in Monday’s draw after the tie had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Neil Reynolds’ men had fallen behind on the half-hour mark in Yorkshire, with Daniel Hernandez putting the lower-ranked home side ahead.
However, Rylands trailed for just six minutes after Ntumba Massanka drew them level, but there was no further scoring thereafter as the tie was decided by penalties.
Goalkeeper Luke Pilling was then the hero, saving three spot-kicks to give Reynolds his first victory in charge.
"First and foremost, I have to say unlucky to Stocksbridge. They competed really well in the game," the Rylands boss said.
"On the balance of play, I think we edged it – we had some clear-cut chances in the first half and in the second, but it’s not nice to lose on penalties so I want to wish them all the best for the rest of the season.
"For us, we want to win and that dressing room hasn’t experienced many this season.
"However they come, you’ve got to accept it and enjoy it. I’m delighted for them all.
"We’ve had a turbulent week for a number of reasons – there’s been family issues, injuries and unavailability, so we’ll enjoy this win."
