WARRINGTON Town play their fourth home game in a row on Tuesday night – and Mark Beesley has been clear in what he wants to see.
Yellows will bid to avoid a third loss in a row on home soil when they welcome newly-promoted Leamington to Cantilever Park, which will see action for the fourth time in just 10 days.
It has been very much a mixed bag in that time, with the euphoria of a come-from-behind win over well-fancied Kidderminster Harriers being followed by disappointing losses to Farsley Celtic and Needham Market.
In order to put things right, Beesley insists his players have to be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch.
“It’s two home defeats, which we’ve wanted to eradicate,” he said following Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Needham Market.
“We weren’t good enough in both boxes today – we had great chances and we also gave silly goals away. If you do that, it’s a recipe for defeat.
“We didn’t do enough overall – I know we’ve had a lot of chances and we should have had a penalty, but we’re not doing enough and that’s a bit concerning.
“We’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again because that wasn’t what we wanted at all.
“We’re giving teams leg-ups and if we continue doing that, we’re not going to win games.
“At the other end, we’ve got to be more ruthless in front of goal.
“We’re missing great chances, open goals – we’ve got to be ruthless at both ends of the pitch and it’s costing us at the moment.
“The business side of football is both boxes and we’re not at it at the moment.”
With vastly experienced players such as Jay Harris, Peter Clarke and Josh Amis still on the sidelines, Beesley is being forced to rely mainly on a young core of squad members currently.
One of those youngsters – full-back Murphy Bennett – became the latest injury concern on Saturday as he limped off with a hamstring injury and with Ollie Southern also struggling with an Achilles issue, numbers are starting to become stretched.
Nevertheless, the Town boss emphasised the need for those on the pitch to adapt quickly to life in the National League North as they look to avoid more disappointment on home soil.
“With young players and lads who haven’t really played at this level, you’re going to get ups and downs and bumps in the road.
“We’ve got to accept that, but they’ve got to learn quickly as it’s a tough league, otherwise it’s going to be a tough season.
“We’ve got to pick ourselves up and put it right on Tuesday.
“I don’t want to be in this habit of losing at home – it’s something we can’t be doing.
“You don’t want to lose any game, but especially at home where your supporters come to watch us in great numbers.”
