AS a young player finding your feet in professional rugby league, the early days of your career can end up being somewhat nomadic.

Warrington Wolves prospect Lucas Green has found that out this year in what is his first year as a full-time pro, but he says he is taking it all in his stride.

The prop has appeared for four different clubs either on loan or dual-registration during 2024 – Widnes Vikings, Bradford Bulls and Swinton Lions in the Championship and North Wales Crusaders in League One.

Add that to the one first-team game he’s played for The Wire – coming off the bench as part of a much-changed side that lost to Wigan Warriors in Round 13 – and it has been a year of chopping and changing for the Yorkshireman.

Now, though, he has the certainty of knowing that, unless recalled by Warrington, he will spend the remainder of the season at the Vikings.

“It’s been hard, but I try and look at it in a positive way,” he told the Widnes Rugby Podcast.

“I’m young and it’s my first year full-time, so I’m taking it all in as experience.

“Whatever I’m doing week-by-week, I’m trying to learn from it and take bits out of it.

“Knowing that I’ve got that safety net and reassurance that it’s either Warrington or Widnes I’ll be playing for each week makes it easier.

“I don’t have to learn anything new and I can bed myself into the group a little bit more.

“I can get a bit more consistency now, so it’s good for me to know what I’m doing for the rest of the year.”

The 19-year-old, who made his senior debut for Warrington last year and went on to play five first-team games in 2023, has caught the eye for the Vikings of late having featured in their past four games.

Three of those have resulted in victories as Allan Coleman’s side sit fifth in the Championship and look well set for a play-off spot.

And having spent a fair portion of his pre-season training as part of Coleman’s squad, Green says that time has helped him slot seamlessly into the side.

“I’m enjoying it. It’s a good set of lads, a good coaching staff and I’m learning a lot,” he said.

“I’m getting some valuable game time and it’s nice to get a bit of consistency.

“Being here for a bit in pre-season has helped me – it’s meant I’ve come back for these few games and it’s been easier as I knew the lads a bit.

“I already knew everyone so I could slot straight back in.”

With the Vikings training twice a week, Green spends the remainder of his time training alongside the rest of Sam Burgess’ Warrington squad.

With his club head coach being among the modern-day greats in the position he plays, the Yorkshireman has been keen to soak up as much as he can as he looks to carve out a successful Super League career.

“There’s no-one better to learn from in my position,” he said.

“With the career he’s had, he’s just a role model. Everything you can learn from him is gold.

“He’s such a good bloke as well, so it’s done me the world of good to be learning from him this season.”
