GEORGE Williams believes any further slip-ups will likely cost Warrington Wolves a top-two finish in Super League.

As such, he says winning all six of their remaining regular-season matches must be the target, starting with Saturday’s Magic Weekend clash with Leeds Rhinos.

The Wire head into Round 22 sitting in third place on 30 points – two adrift of Wigan Warriors and Hull KR, with the Yorkshire club leading the way on points difference.

Finishing in the top two would mean bypassing the eliminator round of the play-offs and going straight into the semi-finals, which they would also have home advantage for.

With the race for play-off spots below them also very much alive, Williams says it all makes for an exciting end to the season all-round.

“We’ve got to win all six if we want to finish in the top two – that’s how we see it,” he said.

“Wigan and Hull KR are great sides as well, but it’s all to play for.

“It’s the same with the race for the six as well – it’s one of the closest comps in a while and it’s exciting.

“Every game matters, so it’s good.”

After the recent defeat to Hull KR left them on the outside of the top two looking in, the rebuild-of-sorts began with a victory at London Broncos on Sunday – a game Williams missed with a slight niggle.

The 36-22 triumph was nervier than expected, but Williams believes it could end up being looked back upon as an important two points at the end of the regular season.

“I’m a bad watcher as it is and I didn’t like watching Sunday,” he said.

“You’re always chasing performances but sometimes they just don’t happen. Sometimes you have to win ugly and that’s what we did.

“I don’t think we ever looked like losing the game but it was probably a bit too close for comfort.

“If you speak to anyone from the three teams in and around it at the minute, we’re all wanting to finish top.

“Even though there’s only six games left, there’s a lot of rugby in front of us and we can’t really afford to slip up in many games, if any. We know we’ve got to be on the ball.

“The win at the weekend wasn’t perfect but it was a win and if we do finish top, second or wherever, we’ll look back on it as a good win in London.”

And so, The Wire now move on to what is effectively an away fixture for them, with Magic Weekend taking place in their opponents’ home city at Leeds United FC's Elland Road home ground.

A partisan crowd is expected to back the Rhinos, who can also ill-afford any further slip-ups as they bid to break into the top six, but Williams insists that is something he and his teammates are relishing.

“We’re excited – they’ll obviously have the home crowd with it being in Leeds and they’re coming off a great win over Wigan at the weekend, so we’ve got our hands full but that’s what we need,” he said.

“We’ve had two performances that have been below our standards, so this is a good chance to bounce back and beat a Leeds team that are playing well under Brad Arthur.

“They’re working really hard for each other, and they’ve got some great individuals. They’re putting a lot into their starts and then it releases the quality they have.”
