THEY may have left the capital with two points, but Sam Burgess admits there is not much else his Warrington Wolves side can take from their win over London Broncos.
The Wire’s 36-22 victory at the Cherry Red Records Stadium was nervier than they would have liked, with Super League’s bottom side reducing what was on two separate occasions an 18-point lead to just six late on.
That was as close as they came to what would have been a seismic shock, but Burgess admits his side were “way off” in terms of their own performance.

Here is everything he said to the press post-match…
Q: Apart from the two points, what else do you feel like you got out of that game?
SB: Not a great deal. I don’t think we got a lot out of it.
London have improved a lot since we played them earlier in the year so we’ve got to give them credit for that, but we were way off today.
The players are pretty disappointed with the performance, but we got the two points so I’m not going to overreact.
Q: They pulled you back to within six points but was there a point you felt that game got out of your control?
SB: Not really, but I didn’t ever feel like we were in control of our own game.
That’s the reality – we never really controlled the game how we planned to so that’s probably a better way of phrasing it.
Q: It’s never ideal when your half-back steps out of your side but does that game show how important George Williams is to your side?
SB: No – everyone’s got a job to do and they have to get it done regardless.
It’s been our system all year. You can’t replace George – that’s impossible – but we’ve also got other quality blokes that should be able to get the job done better than that.
I’m not ripping on the team either – I love what they bring but they know that wasn’t good enough today.
Q: You’ll no doubt analyse your own team in more detail but do you again find yourself having to give the opposition credit for what they threw at you?
SB: They’ve been really good – they throw a lot more at you and physically, they’ve improved in the collision.
They left a few opportunities out there as well which would have made me really nervous.
They’re finding their way as a side and if the season was longer, they’d keep improving and challenging teams.
Q: You had a fantastic performance at Wigan the other week and now you’ve had two that haven’t quite been as good.
What sort of factors come into that as a head coach? It’s a long season and you can’t be at your best every week but are you pleased with how you’re pacing yourselves?
SB: I’m really happy with the team – we went through a really good patch but it’s human nature that it will waver. We’ve just got to find our way through that.
We had a slow week this week and the guys were off for the majority of it, but I’m happy with where we are.
We’ve got six games left and we’ll keep building towards the back end.
