WOOLSTON Rovers bounced back to winning ways with what their head coach described as “a very special win” on Saturday.

Having lost narrowly to promotion-chasing Leigh Miners Rangers last time out, the Green and Golds welcomed Dewsbury Moor Maroons to Monk Sports Club and responded with a 26-20 victory.

In a game that went back-and-forth throughout, Rovers edged the contest by five tries to four as five different players made the scoresheet.

Ryan Brown, Ben Dixon, James Tarpey, Callum Harnett-Smy and Tom Hailey all touched down to the delight of head coach Liam Lawton, who said his side’s “extra bit of composure” proved to be the difference.

“That was definitely a very special win,” he said.

“Dewsbury Moor are a very good side and they contributed fully to a very high-quality encounter, but I just felt overall we just had that extra bit of composure at the crucial times which proved vital at the end of the game.

“We have top players throughout the side and at tough times during the game that shone through and enabled us to get a fantastic victory.”

Rovers are back on home soil again on Saturday as they host Skirlaugh, who were the opposition for neighbours Crosfields at the weekend.

And Rob Campbell’s side ran out 38-26 victors over the Hull-based side to make it back-to-back triumphs.

The head coach admitted his side made life tougher for themselves than perhaps they needed to but had praise for the displays of Brad Stanway and Sam Vernon, both of whom were on the scoresheet.

Stanway booted five successful goals while Vernon crossed for a try alongside Alex Clutterbuck, Aaron Holliday, Tom Ashurst, Elliot Liku, Tom Brown and Dylon Braddish.

“We came with a good squad and confident of getting a result, but made it hard for ourselves,” Campbell said.

“To their credit, Skirlaugh were persistent and just wouldn’t give in – they are fighting for survival in this division and their lads put their hands up and gave 100 per cent effort.

“I think the deciding factor was our skill level and ball distribution, shown by Brad Stanway getting the man of the match.

“They are big and strong – we expect that from a Hull team – but we went around the pack and reaped our rewards out wide.

“Our pack worked tirelessly – Sam Vernon is getting fitter each game and is fitting in well, also coming up with some textbook tackling.”

Soap’s next game sees them welcome Stanningley to Hood Lane on Saturday.
