IT is a game that will be remembered by Warrington Wolves fans for some time.

As Josh Thewlis explains, however, the players know they must quickly move on from thrashing Wigan Warriors for another big test awaits.

A stunning display from Sam Burgess’ men saw several records blown out of the water as they racked up a 40-4 scoreline at the Brick Community Stadium.

It is their widest ever margin of victory against their neighbours, with the win also bringing Wigan’s 17-match unbeaten run on home soil to an emphatic end.

It means Warrington have garnered maximum points from trips to both Wigan and St Helens in the past week but with Hull KR, who are level on points with them at the top of Super League alongside the Warriors, visiting The Halliwell Jones Stadium next week, they have the chance to make it an unprecedented hat-trick.

And while the win was enjoyed on the night, Thewlis insists it must be quickly put in the rear-view mirror.

“We’ll review it in the morning but then that will be this game done and all our eyes will be on Hull KR,” he told the Guardian post-match.

“We’re in that top three with Hull KR and Wigan and we want to take points off the teams around us.

“We have to kick on now and make this time count for us.

“Our confidence is up but we’re staying grounded. Sam (Burgess) always talks about being “above the line” and we’re staying above it at the minute.

“We’re building nicely but we’re not getting too high about the highs or low about the lows.”

The game marked Thewlis’ return to the side following a three-game absence with a shoulder injury, and he celebrated by scoring a length-of-the-field interception try as well as kicking six goals from eight attempts.

And he admits his sprint for the try line was the fitness test he needed.

“I’ve trained once in the past four weeks and that was this week, so I definitely felt it,” he said.

“My legs were starting to go a bit like jelly when I got that interception. I’m a bit off fitness at the minute but hopefully that game can get me back to where I need to be.

“It was a good game to come back in. I was just sliding back in there with what everyone else has been doing.

“Arron Lindop’s been on that right wing and doing a great job but moved to left centre tonight and delivered again.

“I’ve just slotted back into the team but hopefully I can stay in for a while now.

“The injury was a bit of a week-to-week thing but it feels miles better now. Hopefully now I can stay fit until the end of the year and be in those big games.”

As Thewlis mentioned, Lindop has been deputising for him on the right wing but slotted into his preferred left-centre role at Wigan to devastating effect, scoring twice in another demonstration of his prodigious talent.

The homegrown starlet was hailed as “genuinely world class” by Burgess post-match, and his teammate was also keen to praise Lindop’s contributions.

“He’s 18 years old, but he came up with some superb plays,” he said.

“That’s not just the tries he’s scoring either – his defensive work was solid as was his yardage.

“He’s an absolute pleasure to be around and he’s a great teammate.

“He’s so humble and as a Warrington lad, he loves the club. It means the world to him to play for us.”
