BY playing a Super League match in Las Vegas, Warrington Wolves will be breaking new ground for rugby league in Europe.

Their clash with Wigan Warriors next March will be the first game in the competition’s history to be played on the American continent and only the second to be played outside of Europe.

Wigan played in the previous one, beating Hull FC 24-10 in a match played in Wollongong, Australia, in February 2018, but for Warrington, the match will break several records.

The Wire have played matches outside of Europe before and they have even played Wigan in America, facing them in the Great American Challenge in Milwaukee in June 1989.

They also faced South Sydney Rabbitohs at Sydney’s Redfern Oval in January 2012.

However, both of those games were friendly matches.

They did visit New Zealand and Australia to play in an expanded World Club Championship in 1997 but the game at Allegiant Stadium will be the first time they have played competitively in a league match outside of Europe.

As such, it will also smash the record for being the furthest away from Warrington the club have played competitively in a league game, with Las Vegas being 5,035 miles away.

The previous record is the 1,129-mile distance to Barcelona, where they faced Catalans Dragons at the city’s Olympic Stadium in June 2009.

With a capacity of 65,000, Allegiant Stadium will be among the biggest stadia Warrington have played in - but it will be far from top of the list.

The club's trips to Wembley and Old Trafford see to that, but there is a hope the game could break the attendance record for a single Super League fixture, which currently stands at 31,555.

That game also involved Wigan as they took on Catalans at FC Barcelona's iconic Camp Nou home in May 2019.
