MATTY Nicholson insists he has made no decision about his future as speculation continues to rumble.

Warrington Wolves are said to be preparing for life without their young back-rower from 2025, with the 20-year-old said to be closing in on a move to NRL side Canberra Raiders.

Nicholson’s form has earned him a call-up to the England squad for Saturday’s mid-season Test against France, where he will be in contention for his second senior cap.

And as he prepares for that game, he insists thoughts about where his club future lies are firmly at the back of his mind.

“Nothing’s decided yet,” he said.

“I’ve tried not to think about it too much. It’s hard when it’s all over social media and things like that but I try to stay away from it and concentrate on my game.

“I can’t think about it yet – I just try and do my best for the team and that’s my focus.”

As his club teammates enjoy a week’s break with the Super League campaign just past its halfway stage, Nicholson and teammates George Williams, James Harrison and Ben Currie will instead be in international camp as head coach Shaun Wane prepares his England side to face their cross-Channel neighbours in Toulouse.

And while he’s been bombarded with pictures of his colleagues making the most of their time off, Nicholson insists there’s no place he’d rather be.

“I’ve had a few inside jokes with some of the lads – Matty Ashton and Josh Thewlis are sending me pictures from the beach, but I’d much rather be playing for my country,” he said.

“It’s always a step up from club level. It’s lads you play against every week but when you come together to play for your country, it’s always something special.

“We’ve been going better at Warrington this year and if the team’s playing better, I’m generally playing better but it’s nice to get away at times.

“It’s always a special feeling in camp. A week away from your club can refresh you.”

Since returning from pre-season hernia surgery in the Challenge Cup sixth-round tie against London Broncos, Nicholson has been ever-present and impressive on The Wire’s right edge.

His work in defence has stood out, making an average of 33 tackles per game in his 11 Super League appearances while forming a strong defensive combination with George Williams – one he hopes can continue on the international stage.

“I really enjoy the defensive side and Sam (Burgess, Wire head coach) has really helped me with it since coming into the club.

“Having no missed tackles or at least not many is something I really pride myself on. If I’m doing my job defensively, it helps my edge out massively.

“Being out there with George, there’s no better half in the competition in my opinion.

“Playing outside of him is a dream so hopefully we can carry that on for England.”

Nicholson’s international debut came this time last year on his club home ground as England hammered France 64-0 at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

However, he is expecting Laurent Frayssinous’ side to be a completely different proposition on home soil.

“I always enjoy playing in France,” he said.

“We were only in Catalans a few weeks ago and we had a great win there, but it’s a different kind of atmosphere over there.

“You’ve got the heat to contend with as well – it’s a tough challenge but one I enjoy.

“I think they’ll have a much stronger team than they had last year, so they will be a completely different proposition. We’re expecting a really tough game.”
