SAM Burgess admitted he was "deflated" after watching his Warrington Wolves side lose in the Challenge Cup Final.
However, he insists he is determined to ensure his players learn from the experience and improve because of it having lost to Wigan Warriors at Wembley.
Here is everything Burgess said in his post-match presser...
Q: Your side never really came close to producing what we know they can produce, did they?
SB: Yeah, I’d agree with that.
Q: Did they freeze?
SB: We’ve a young squad – we had 12 players out there who had never played in a final so you’d like to think they’ll be better next time.
It’s experience for us as a group, a new group and I’m a new coach.
I wouldn’t say we froze but the occasion got us a bit early.
Q: All of that said, you still had the opportunity to get back into the game so is that the most frustrating thing?
SB: We were always behind and didn’t play the way we’ve played all year.
That’s the most disappointing – if we’d have come here and played great but got beat, we could live with that.
The players are really disappointed in there and rightly so, but we’ve got to learn from that, take the experience and move forward.
Q: Bevan French was obviously very difficult to stop in that kind of mood?
SB: He’s a great player and Wigan are very good defensively as well as having some very good players who can cause you problems.
Harry Smith’s kicking game was exceptional and kept us in good areas of the field.
They played as a team and played as Wigan – they’re champions for a reason. We’ve got a bit of learning to do from this.
Q: It was obviously a very emotionally-charged game, do you think that had anything to do with how they played?
SB: I don’t know – I don’t know their emotions. I just watch their performance and they didn’t perform how they have all year.
I’ll have to ask them that through the week, I think.
Q: How much of it was down to scoreboard pressure, do you think?
SB: There was no scoreboard pressure in the first half when we made nine errors.
We didn’t play how we’ve played all year and the players are more disappointed than anybody about that, but we’ll get back to the drawing board.
It’s not the end of us. We’ve got another great challenge coming up – there’s 14 games to go in the league and that’s 14 opportunities to improve ourselves, then we go again.
Q: What did you say to them at half time?
SB: Whatever I said, it didn’t work!
Not a lot – I asked them to make some better choices and fix the game up.
I asked them if they were happy with the first half and I don’t think they were.
They had to make some better choices – we didn’t really get into the feel of the game but they’ll learn from it.
I’ve got a really disappointed group there. I’m disappointed too – I wanted to see a great spectacle and I don’t think we saw that.
Q: Jordy Crowther came off in the second half – how bad is he?
SB: He’s got a leg injury but we’re not sure how bad it is yet.
I don’t think it’s too bad but he couldn’t get back on the field.
Q: Lachlan Fitzgibbon as well couldn’t get back on after half time?
SB: He’s carried a back problem for a couple of weeks. He was coming into the game a bit underdone and couldn’t get through the game.
He’ll probably need a little bit of a break.
Q: This will obviously take some getting over but are you confident in your team’s ability to not be too shaken by this?
SB: We’re not going to be shaken by it.
We made the final – however many teams competed to be here but we’re here. We just had a bad day at the office.
Is it going to knock our confidence? No
Are we disappointed? Of course we are, but it’s only going to make us better in the long run.
I expect them to be disappointed but I don’t know how it can knock our confidence.
It will just give us greater experience for next time we’re here.
Q: It’s your first final as a head coach so what will you learn from it?
SB: I’ll probably know a little bit more next week.
It’s all raw at the minute – I’m feeling the guys’ pain in the changing rooms and I’m a bit deflated too at the moment.
I’ll figure that out through the week. I’ll look at where I can get better, where I can improve and how I can help them better.
That will be part of my development.
