LOOKING at the stats from Warrington Wolves’ defeat in Perpignan last night, a key area in which they fell short is clearly visible.
Many of the figures from The Wire’s 16-10 loss are evenly split but there was a clear distinction in terms of the metres gained, with the Dragons marching themselves down the field with greater ease.
There was no shortage of hard graft from the Warrington players, who made 42 more carries than their hosts - 208 to 166 - but it was the ultimate case of quality over quantity as Catalans' carries yielded 35 more metres (1,214 compared to 1,179).
The Catalans forwards made 60 more metres than their Warrington counterparts from four fewer carries across the whole game - they carried for 661m from 82 carries at an average of just over eight metres each, with 125 of those metres coming from Chris Satae, who was impressive off the bench.
Between them, the Wire big men made 601m from 86 carries, averaging 6.98m per carry.
Perhaps the biggest disparity, though, can be found in kick return metres – Catalans made 69 compared to Wire’s 26, illustrating the struggles the visitors had in keeping the home side penned to their own line.
Perhaps the biggest indicator of that was the game-high 164 metres made by Dragons winger Tom Davies, with his fellow winger Tom Johnstone (111) and centre Arthur Romano (104) also reaching three figures.

Centre Toby King was Wire's biggest "metre-eater" with 124 while three other Wire players reached three figures - front-rowers James Harrison and Paul Vaughan made 113 and 117 respectively, Matty Ashton clocked 115 and Matt Dufty 109.
Danny Walker topped the game's tackle count with 49, closely followed by teammate Ben Currie (39).
