MARK Beesley was a delighted manager again as his Warrington Town side broke new ground by beating Chorley on Saturday afternoon.

Town’s 2-1 victory over the play-off chasing Magpies at Cantilever Park meant they recorded a third straight league victory for the first time as a National League North club as their upward curve continues.

They now find themselves just one point shy of a play-off spot after late goals from Connor Woods and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts earned the spoils in front of more than 1,400 fans.

Before the game, Beesley had labelled Chorley as the best side he had seen this season but his charges have now completed a league double over the Lancastrians having won 1-0 at Victory Park earlier in the season.

“I’m really pleased – I’ve watched them a few times this season and they’re a really good team, so for us to go toe-to-toe with them and match them is a credit to what we’ve got in the building,” he said.

“We had a couple of really good chances in the first half and on another day, we probably come in a couple of goals ahead. They had one really good chance which Dan (Atherton) made an excellent save for.

“They’re a good team, we’re a good team and it was a good game.

“Testament to the level of the game were Connor and Isaac’s goals, especially Connor’s which was a brilliant finish.”

Woods’ excellent finish broke the deadlock 11 minutes from time before Buckley-Ricketts continued his excellent goalscoring form by calmly rounding Chorley keeper Max Dearnley and finding the empty net on the counter-attack.

He had seen a lob come off the crossbar in the first half but it is now four goals in three games for the forward having scored a hat-trick against Buxton last month and 11 for the season in total.

“He had a goal disallowed last week and today, he could have had another matchball,” Beesley said of his leading goalscorer.

“He keeps getting in there and I thought his composure to go round the goalkeeper was brilliant.

“It shows he’s learning and that’s what we’re trying to do – we’re trying to push the lads to be better.

“We had another great crowd watching us again and they’re enjoying the players we’ve got.”

Buckley-Ricketts and Woods have formed part of a revamped forward line in the absence of skipper Josh Amis with an ankle injury, with Matty McDonald and Matt Grivosti also impressing as part of a fluid attacking unit.

And without Amis’ physical presence, Beesley says those four have to continue to find ways of causing problems.

“We haven’t got that outball, so we’ve got to move, rotate and be fluid against teams that are organised and good defensively,” he said.

“I thought at times, we were brilliant with that and we’ve got to keep being like that.

“Of course we can do a little bit better, but at times the fluidity of the front four was excellent.”
