WARRINGTON Wolves’ academy players are about to embark upon the trip of a lifetime to Australia.
Tomorrow, a group of around 40 players, staff and family members will depart for a three-week post-season Tour Down Under as a result of various fundraising events and donations throughout the year.
While there, the team will play three fixtures against some of the best young players Australia has to offer as well as taking in various cultural experiences.
Following their arrival in Sydney on Monday, they will travel to their base in Penrith, where they have been granted access to the training facilities used by NRL Premiers Penrith Panthers as a base for the duration of their stay.
In terms of matches, they will face age group sides from South Sydney Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers on October 21 and 28 respectively while an opposed training session against youngsters from Canterbury Bulldogs is also pencilled in.
They will wrap up their tour with a game against the New South Wales under 17s side on November 4 before departing Sydney to return to England on November 6.
The tour comes after another successful season for the academy, with the under 18s reaching the play-offs and losing in the semi-finals to Wigan Warriors, only to be inserted into the Grand Final following Wigan’s use of more interchanges than permitted during their clash.
The team were beaten in the final by St Helens but can reflect upon a season that saw them win 10 of the 14 games they played while academy team captain Lucas Green also made his first-team debut.
The scholarship side also enjoyed a good year, winning five and drawing one of the seven matches they played in 2023.
