WHILE four of their Super League rivals remain on course for Old Trafford, Warrington Wolves’ 2023 season is officially over.
Saturday’s play-off eliminator defeat at St Helens means The Wire will play no further part in this year, bringing to an end what has been a rollercoaster year at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Club records were broken at both ends of the spectrum – eight victories in a row constituted their best ever start to a Super League campaign, while the run of eight straight losses in all competitions was their longest in a single summer-era season.
It meant they parted company with a coach mid-season for the first time since James Lowes was sacked in 2009 as Daryl Powell departed in July after exactly 50 games in charge.
Gary Chambers steered the ship until the end of the campaign, with modern-day legend of the game Sam Burgess arriving next year to take over as head coach – the first time he will have held such a role for a top-grade side.
Now, we take a look back at the 2023 season in numbers…
Warrington Wolves 2023 season in numbers
The Wire played 30 matches in all competitions – 28 in Super League and two in the Challenge Cup – and had a perfectly even split of 15 victories and 15 defeats.
In all, 29 players made appearances for the club this season with four of them – full-back Matt Dufty, skipper Stefan Ratchford, second rower Ben Currie and hooker Danny Walker – playing in every single match.
Of those four, Ratchford and Currie were the only ones to start every game this year.
The team scored 106 tries across their 30 games, with Matty Ashton leading the way with 20 touchdowns in all competitions.
Two other players reached double figures – Matt Dufty with 14 and George Williams with 11.
Their biggest victory came earlier this month as they thrashed Castleford Tigers 66-12 at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, with the heaviest defeat being the 42-6 humbling at bottom side Wakefield Trinity that proved to be Powell’s last game in charge.
Warrington went unbeaten against two sides this season - they won all three of their matches against Huddersfield Giants and also won home and away against Hull KR.
Conversely, there were two sides Wire failed to beat at any stage this season - neighbours Wigan Warriors and St Helens, losing all three matches against the former and four against the latter.
