SAM Burgess says the challenge of coaching Warrington Wolves is one he is “fully committed to and excited by.”
The legendary former forward has been confirmed as The Wire’s new head coach for 2024 onwards, with the Yorkshireman having signed a two-year deal.
The move will mark 24-cap England and Great Britain international Burgess’ first venture into a senior head coaching role and his return to Super League for the first time in any capacity since leaving Bradford Bulls in 2009.
From there, he enjoyed a magnificent career with South Sydney Rabbitohs across two spells, helping them win the 2014 NRL Premiership while picking up the Clive Churchill Medal for man of the match in their Grand Final win.
Burgess retired in 2019 due to a shoulder injury but is now looking forward to the next chapter of his career in the game.
First, he insists there remains a job to do in his role as assistant coach at Souths for the rest of this year.
“I’m pleased to confirm I will take on the role of Head Coach at the Warrington Wolves for seasons 2024 and 2025.
“From playing in the Super League to having the opportunity to lead an incredible club, it’s a full circle moment and one I am fully committed to and excited by.
“I want to thank Simon (Moran, club owner), Stuart (Middleton, chairman) and Karl (Fitzpatrick, chief executive) at the Wolves for their courage and collaboration, as I look forward to returning to England to coach this great club.
“To Russell (Crowe, actor and South Sydney co-owner), Blake (Solly, CEO), JD (Jason Demetriou, head coach) and the stakeholders at South Sydney, thank you for supporting me in taking on this new position.
“We still have an opportunity to play some great football for the remainder of the year and to do so alongside our current staff and squad is my focus.”
