HAVING had his first taste of the Warrington Wolves hot seat on Friday, Gary Chambers is still unsure as to whether or not it will be his last.
The Wire were beaten 30-10 by Catalans Dragons in their first game under the interim charge of Chambers, who took over following Daryl Powell’s exit.
Club officials are continuing the search for Powell’s long-term replacement, with Justin Holbrook rejecting the role in favour of remaining in Australia as Sydney Roosters assistant coach.
Former England forward Sam Burgess is the latest name being linked to the role but back in England, Chambers is none the wiser as to where he stands.
When asked whether he expects to be in charge for the trip to Leeds Rhinos on August 20, he said: “I don’t know.
“I love this place to the bone, so I’ll give everything I’ve got until Simon (Moran, club owner) and the board tell me they’ve got the right person, then I’ll step aside and keep pushing them on from behind the scenes.
“The aim is to leave them in a good place.”
The Wire have another fortnight’s break before their next fixture as Super League pauses for the playing of the Challenge Cup Final on Saturday.
They are not long since back from another rest but while the players were given an extended period of time off during that pause, that will not be the case this time around.
“It’s a golden opportunity for us,” Chambers said.
“We’ll go hard – we’ll get them in until maybe Thursday and it gives me and Rich Marshall the chance to do a bit more work with them.
“I need to speak to them individually as I haven’t been around them a lot, so we’ll get some meetings planned so I can really see what makes them tick.
“We’ll let them get away for the weekend to relax a bit before getting back into it.
“The aim for Rich and I is to get something into them by the time we leave for the weekend, to have something planted in their mind.
“I’ll show my hand now – we’re not going to change our game plan because we haven’t fulfilled it. We’re going to do something and we’re going to do it well.”
