WARRINGTON Town could make a little piece of history on home turf this evening.

Avoiding defeat against Whitby Town at Cantilever Park tonight would extend their current unbeaten run to 15 matches, which would be their longest run without defeat in recent history.

Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Marske United – secured by a late Dec Walker free kick – saw them match the 14-game unbeaten run achieved by the 2018-19 team that won the Northern Premier League play-offs but fell short of promotion after losing a one-off “super play-off” against King’s Lynn Town.

Their current sequence has fuelled their bid to go one better this year – they sit fourth in the NPL Premier Division table as their season enters its final 10 games.

Tonight could see plenty of movement within the play-off spots as both teams either side of Town are also in action – third-placed Radcliffe are at home to Atherton Collieries while fifth-placed Bamber Bridge, who visit Cantilever Park on Saturday, are at Liversedge.

The focus of manager Mark Beesley, however, is squarely on a Whitby side who have dragged themselves away from relegation trouble with a run of five wins in their past seven matches.

“They’re on a really good run of form, so it will be another tough game,” he said.

“It’s always hard having had a long trip on a Saturday to be ready again for Tuesday.

“It’s important we do the right things so that we’re ready.”

Warrington Town’s final 10 matches

On paper, Town’s run-in looks a hellishly tough one.

Their final 10 fixtures feature games against all of the other sides currently in the top five alongside them as well as teams just outside the play-off picture as it stands.

The run-in includes trips to Radcliffe, Gainsborough Trinity, Marine and runaway league leaders South Shields as well as their longest away journey of the season – the 350-mile round trip to Morpeth Town.

Bamber Bridge are due to visit Cantilever Park on Saturday while the season ends with a home game against Hyde United, who currently sit second.
