IT really was a team effort from Warrington Wolves to get the job done at Huddersfield Giants.

Collectively, they showed superb spirit and determination to defend their line amid waves of pressure from the home side while finding a way to snatch points at the other end.

The result? A second victory from as many games in 2023 and a continuation of their promising start.

But which Wire stars shone the brightest? We pick the five players who impressed us most here…

Matty Ashton

We all know what the livewire winger can do with the ball in his hand and space in front of him, and there was another demonstration of that here.

There was only going to be one result when he picked off Tui Lolohea’s pass inside his own 10 to effectively seal the victory, but it was another interception that really caught the eye.

In the first half as Huddersfield poured forward, he made an all-or-nothing play to snatch a pass when the Giants looked certain to score.

One criticism levelled at Ashton in some quarters is that his decision-making in executing a line break can sometimes be found wanting, but his first try showed a really calm head on that score.

On both sides of the ball, the speedster really was outstanding.

James Harrison

A man that seems to get more and more impressive every time he takes the field and on the evidence we’re seeing, tying him down to a new deal during pre-season looks to be a masterstroke.

And when Daryl Powell revealed post-match that his training time at the moment is minimal as he manages the knee injury he suffered in the off-season, it makes his efforts all the more eye-catching.

Harrison got through 55 minutes in a superb opening stint. His defensive work rate was once again excellent and now he’s showing a happy knack of getting over the line.

The timing of his second try in as many games - brought about by an excellent Sam Kasiano offload - was critical and stifled any momentum Huddersfield would have hoped to build after the break.

With bodies light up front at the moment, having someone with seemingly a Rolls Royce engine under the bonnet as Harrison appears to have is especially valuable.

Stefan Ratchford

This display from the captain could go some way to reassuring people that he can certainly do a job in the centres.

His overall impact will be measured over a longer period of course, but he did himself no harm here.

The left edge he marshalls came under heavy fire in the first half as Huddersfield repeatedly launched short-side raids down that side, clearly having identified some kind of weakness.

Not that it showed as until Kevin Naiqama exploited tired legs for a consolation score in the dying embers of the contest, no chinks in the armour were found.

Ratchford, who looks to have gained more than a few pounds of muscle over the off-season, was key in those efforts to keep them out.

Josh Drinkwater

For all of Wire’s defensive excellence, they had to make sure they were causing enough problems with the ball.

On that front, the game plan was simple but effective as they gave Huddersfield a taste of their own medicine, completing sets well and making them come out of corners.

Leading those efforts was Drinkwater, who gave another demonstration as to why people within the club feel like he is the missing piece in the jigsaw.

A steady hand on the tiller, the Australian’s kicking was on point almost without exception.

George Williams

The England star did not have quite the same platform to wreak havoc as he did against Leeds, but he was effective in different ways.

His short kicking game is arguably the best in Super League as demonstrated by the perfectly-weighted grubber to set up Peter Mata’utia’s try.

In the second half too, spotting Kevin Naiqama jumping out of the line and readjusting to send Stefan Ratchford through to eventually set Matty Ashton’s first try up showed his speed of thought.

Add that to some excellent early-count kicks and it makes for another solid display.
