THE full severity of Matty Nicholson’s dislocated shoulder will be determined by scans this week.

The second rower was withdrawn early on during Warrington Wolves’ dominant Round One win over Leeds Rhinos, forcing a reshuffle within the Wire pack.

It mattered little as the hosts ran out convincing 42-10 victors, but the only cloud on an otherwise near-perfect night was the injury suffered by Nicholson.

With the squad lacking depth in the back row, Powell admits the 19-year-old’s injury is “not great news” as they wait to hear the full extent of the damage.

“He’ll get a scan but he’s dislocated his shoulder,” he said.

“It’s gone back in pretty quickly, which can be either good news or bad news. We won’t know about that until he’s had that scan.

“It’s tough as we haven’t got great depth in that position. There are players that can fill in there but it’s not great news.”

Powell also gave an update on James Harrison – the man who filled in impressively on the edge following Nicholson’s withdrawal – and centre Peter Mata’utia, both of whom were withdrawn late in the game.

“James Harrison was just exhausted – we’d just pushed him as far as he could go,” he said.

“Pete Mata’utia had a little bit of an illness at half time and that got a little bit worse.

“We’d won the game so we didn’t want to risk anything extra with him.”
