JOSH Drinkwater says the decision to join Warrington Wolves was a simple one to make.
And now his long-anticipated move to The Halliwell Jones Stadium has been officially confirmed, he is targeting a return to competing for trophies.
That is something he has become used to during his time at Catalans Dragons as he played a big role in their transformation into perennial challengers.
If The Wire are to make a similar journey and turn their fortunes around following an 11th-place finish in 2022, the Australian looks set to play a big role.
“I’m very excited about the move,” the 30-year-old said.
“I’ve played against Warrington many times and it’s always been a club that I’ve admired from afar. When the opportunity came up it was a very easy decision to make.
“I’ve enjoyed my time in France but I’m really looking forward to getting over now and embracing the English culture again.”
Drinkwater’s arrival completes The Wire’s creative spine, with his partnership with George Williams in the halves set to be the subject of much focus.
Daryl Powell and everyone associated with the club will be hoping his organisational style of play will free the England international up to play his best rugby.
It is a prospect that excites the former Hull KR, Leigh and London Broncos man but he stressed getting their combination right will take time.
“I’m excited to be part of the spine in this team,” he said.
“George is a world-class player. Also players like Daryl Clark and Matt Dufty as well – they’re all great players and I’m really looking forward to developing combinations with them.
“It’ll take a little bit of time to gel and people will need to understand that but when it does, hopefully we can have some success.
“When you play for a club like Warrington the ambition has to be trophies. The club wants to win Super League, as do I.
“It’s going to be a process – there’s a pre-season ahead to get ourselves ready.
“With the squad we’ve got here, if we can gel and come together, I don’t see why we can’t be challenging for that.”
