HAVING been given the number two shirt for 2023, Josh Thewlis is now looking to nail down his spot on the Warrington Wolves wing.

The 20-year-old academy graduate has featured extensively both on the flanks and in his preferred position of full-back during his four seasons and 39 appearances as a first-team player.

Off the back of arguably his finest senior campaign to date individually, he looks to have been given the nod as first-choice winger by head coach Daryl Powell.

Thewlis admits he has plenty more adjusting to do but believes a full block of pre-season training as a winger will help him no end.

“I’m normally not too bothered about squad numbers, but this just feels special,” he said having been given a top 13 squad number for the first time.

“I really wasn’t expecting it either, so I’m very happy to get it.

“Hopefully I can get a full pre-season on the wing – that’s not really something I’ve done before as I’m normally training at full-back.

“If playing on the wing is what Powelly wants me to do, I’m more than happy to do it.

“I’m comfortable on the wing and comfortable at full-back, so I’ll do whatever’s best for the team.”

Thewlis delivered some stand-out performances in both positions during 2022 as he further cemented himself as a first-team player, scoring 10 tries in 20 appearances.

He then rounded off the year by scoring five tries in two post-season matches for England Knights, including four in one game against Scotland playing on the right wing.

His international commitments mean his return to pre-season training will be slightly delayed but when he does eventually report back, he will join a very familiar face in the shape of younger brother Jake.

The centre is among the latest crop of academy graduates handed first-team deals for next season, but he can expect no special treatment from his elder sibling.

“I’ve spoken to him about it and when we’re at work, he has to just be another player,” Josh said.

“He’s my brother and I’m very proud of him, but I’ll treat him the same as everyone else and I think he’ll do the same for me.

“Mum and Dad are bursting with pride and I’m proud of him for what he’s done so far, so it will be good to have a full year at first team with him at least.

“I’m itching to get back in. I quite like pre-season and getting around the lads – you see everyone pretty much every day of the week, and it’s time to dig deep and get ready for the new season.

“I get an extra week off having been with England Knights, but I wouldn’t want to be off for any longer. I don’t want to miss out on any opportunities.”
