FACED with a young Kirkby Lonsdale side that arrived at Beechwood rooted to the foot of the table, Lymm were expected to win handsomely on Saturday.

They did just that, breaking the 100-point barrier for the first time in their history as they ran in 18 tries overall.

Vice-captain Nathan Beesley touched down four times while four players – Joe Murphy, Ed Morris, Paddy Jennings and Toby Phillips – all notched braces in a 118-3 victory.

Lymm remain second in the Regional One North West table but travel to Wirral on Saturday with the expectation of a much tougher contest.

After the game, director of rugby Adam Fletcher expressed sympathy for the visitors but also his delight with his side’s display having given several key players a rest.

“We knew before the game that the score would be very one-sided’, he said.

“Kirkby have struggled since the Covid-19 pandemic – they were the last team we played before rugby stopped in 2020 and they beat us comfortably that day.

“We handed starting league debuts to Nonso Agina and Ben Thompson while Toby Philips made his first league start at scrum-half – all three had really good games.

“We asked the boys to work on a few aspects of the game we have been struggling with recently, one of them being ball retention. We managed to do this brilliantly today.

“Kirkby kept positive throughout and kept defending for the 80 minutes. They are a club in transition, and I wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.”

Thompson had marked his debut with the opening try while James Kimber, Ali Sutherland, Tom Shard, Gavin Woods and Rhys Lilly were also on the scoresheet.
