DESPITE losing on Saturday, Warrington RUFC were still able to climb to second in the Counties One Lancashire and Cheshire table.

Visitors Sefton ended a five-match winning run for Stuart Beeley’s side as they emerged 29-22 victors at Stockton Lane.

However, the two bonus points Warrington gained from the game thanks to their four tries and losing by seven points or less allowed them to move above Didsbury Toc H in the table.

They trail leaders Liverpool St Helens by three points ahead of their next fixture, which sees them travel to Aldwinians on Saturday.

As the club marked its past players’ day, Warrington got off to a flying start as flanker Jonny Evans finished off a good team move to score the game’s first try, with centre JP Hudson adding the extras.

While Sefton drew level with a converted try of their own, winger Luke Turner then touched down wide on the right to re-establish the home side’s lead.

Either side of the half-time break, however, Sefton scored two converted tries to take a nine-point lead.

Warrington attempted to fight back and two tries either side of a Sefton penalty goal brought them to within two points of the lead.

First, substitute scrum-half Jack Whittaker and second row George Percival combined for the former to touch down before winger Jack Rigby scored in the corner with 10 minutes to go to secure a four-try bonus point.

The home side piled on the pressure in search of a winning score, but chances went begging and it was the visitors who had the final say with their fourth try in the closing moments although the missed conversion allowed Warrington to retain a losing bonus point.
