LYMM Angling Club's story of the week is no doubt the exploits of two club officials who fished Founders Pool.

Assistant head bailiff Brett McPhee got on the water just before dinner time on Saturday and was there primarily to test out a new bait.

Mid-afternoon he was joined by water keeper Mick O'Connor and soon they were doubting their decision to go fishing at all that day, as it was freezing cold and the water was close to freezing point.

All of a sudden, one of Brett's rods went on a screaming run.

That was the start of an epic battle with the fish going just about where it wanted. However, it eventually succumbed to Brett's skill.

He knew it was a big fish but was extremely surprised and elated when he discovered it was a leather carp of 26lbs 0ozs 0drms, breaking his personal best record for that type of carp by 3lbs.

True leathers are rare and to catch one in pristine condition without a single scale is quite a coup.

Meanwhile, across the water Mick broke his personal best carp record by landing a mirror carp of 21-14-0.

So, both Mick and Brett were extremely happy that they did not allow themselves to be beaten by the cold conditions, just showing that a little bit of grit rewarded them both.

Founders Pool has always been enigmatic due to its long history of producing carp when nowhere else does.

Carp anglers of old have always known that this was the water to try a session regardless of the time of year and conditions.

A well-known old timer of the club can be found on there every Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and it is very rare that he has failed to catch something. White dendrobena worms have been his favourite winter bait for many years, but don't tell him I told you so.

There are signs that fish are switching on, probably spurred more by the lengthening day than an increase in temperature.

Regardless of weather, fish do need to build themselves up a little while their bodies are producing spawn.

Tench are showing in low numbers on Whitley Pool and Lymmvale, as are crucians and carp in waters where they exist.

Perch and roach can be relied upon to produce some sport throughout the year and by using small worms you never know what will take them.

A bunch of keys has been handed in, which clearly belong to a club member as they contain a club key. If you think they may be yours, give me a call.

Work parties continue on Saturday, meeting at Whitley Pool storage area at 9am.

There will be no administration session at Roosters on Monday as it is the first Monday of the month.
