WOLVES coach Paul Cullen was asked if there had been any further consideration given to the team's goal-kicking situation after Lee Briers missed four from five attempts against St Helens at the weekend following some wayward marksmanship in the opening round against Hull.

Cullen said: "There has, and that has simply been a continuance.

"Lee Briers will continue as our primary kicker because he's the best kicker that we have."

Briers has gone through rough patches in the past and turned his goal-kicking form around.

He is third in the club's all-time kicking charts and holds the record for most drop goals in a Wolves player's career.

He also jointly holds the joint record for most goals in one game, 14.

His current form in other areas is superb, with his vision and distribution leading to tries for Chris Hicks, Martin Gleeson and Paul Johnson against St Helens.

Briers' goal-kicking deputy Chris Bridge could be sidelined for the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles' tendon at Knowsley Road.

Supporters have raised the point that perhaps Chris Hicks could now take on a goal-kicking role, having previously done so for brief spells in the NRL.

Cullen picked up this point, saying: "Although I'm sure it's a topic of debate, I hope no-one out there is deliberately pretending they don't know that Chris Hicks has had a very serious ankle operation.

"What we were never going to do - and Chris didn't want it either - was for us to overload him with kick practice after a serious ankle operation.

"That operation was on one ankle, but he had badly injured the other ankle leading up to the Grand Final with Manly at the end of last season.

"Commonsense tells everyone that you're not going to load a player in those circumstances with the kicking responsibilities and duties.

"He was never a prolific kicker in the NRL. It's simply another string to his bow which I'm sure we'll see when the time presents. Now is not the time for that to present.

"Lee Briers will work through his form. He will be offered kick clinic and kick expertise as we have done in the past when he's needed it.

"It's there, we've used it in the past, we will use it again.

"We mustn't forget that his pass form and his line running with his three quarters has been superb.

"That was Keiron Cunningham and Sean Long that he ran straight through to score a try at the weekend.

"They weren't young inexperienced players out of position.

"It was Lee Briers that was putting Martiin Gleeson right through Sean Long again to score in the first half.

"I think we've got to be wary we don't spend too much time beating our players up becauuse he played some very good footballand his kick form will come back."
