SOME beautiful spring-like weather spurred one or two Lymm Angling Club members to bring out their fishing tackle in readiness for their seasonal campaigns this week.
Things to do include renewing pole elastics, cleaning and lubricating reels, considering new line on reels and checking rigs, as well as dreaming about putting all your kit to the test by catching some really big fish later this year.
This year, more so than in previous years, members of Lymm Angling Club can realistically consider rewriting their record books on many species.
Crabmill Flash has already given up tench to double figures, bream to 15lbs, catfish to 50lbs with bigger fish known, and perch and roach of more than 3lbs. If you add to this list carp of more than 20lbs, this surely makes Crabmill Flash one of the country's top specimen fisheries.
Lymmvale still remains the holder of a national record, a golden orfe that came to Mike Wilkinson several years ago.
Last year the water also produced a number of tench of more than 11lbs and there will be no right-minded angler that would not consider such fish as massive.
Lymmvale is also the home of chub of more than 8lbs, carp to nearly 30lbs and catfish well in excess of 50lbs.
Belmont Carp Complex virtually guarantees carp of more than 20lbs even to anglers new to the sport.
Whitley Pool is a fabulous tench dominated fishery, which can exhaust even the fittest among us when the water switches on for tench - early spring and summer mornings are considered the best time.
The water also holds carp up to 30lbs and a large population of big crucians and uncoloured goldfish.
Sunday's work parties were put to task on Whitley and Village Pools with some really good work completed on both sites.
The turnout was very good and it is hoped that will be repeated at the next work party scheduled for March 1.
The warm weather has increased action a little but the overnight frosts have cancelled out the warm daytime temperatures and catch rates have not took off just yet.
However, Belmont Pool has produced many fish over the last week, and I tend to think it is to do with the water in the shallower parts warming up quickly.
Village Pool, Grimsditch, Farm, Founders and Woodside Pools are producing some nice silver fish, with the bigger ones showing at dawn and dusk.
For those that like a lot of action, just use light tackle and small baits and bag up on smaller fish, and very often a bonus fish will be caught probably spurred to feed by the feeding actions of its smaller cousins.
