WOLVES chief Paul Cullen says the club may consider bringing in a kicking coach this year if one is available that is suitable to the team's marksmen.

His views were expressed to Warrington Guardian after Lee Briers was off target by some distance with three of his seven shots at goal against Hull in the opening game of engage Super League XIII.

With Wolves scoring six tries to three the misses had little bearing on the result but it could have been a different story on a different night.

Stand off Briers, the club's second highest goal machine of all time, was very honest in his own appraisal of his kicking performance against the Airlie Birds saying it was very poor and adding: "I'll get used to swinging the ball better and I'll work harder at it."

But Cullen revealed that practice is not always the answer with kickers like Briers and his understudy Chris Bridge.

"Both Lee and Chris are confidennce instinctive kickers," said Cullen.

"When we have put kick coaches with Lee Briers it hasn't always worked out the way we would have liked it to.

"A classic example with Lee was in 2004. He broke his scaphoid in 2003 and had double operations on what was a serious injury.

"When we went into the first game at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2004 Lee hadn't kicked a ball for eight months.

"But he kicked seven out of seven on the opening night against Wakefield and that's because he's an instinctive kicker.

"In the training session on the morning prior to last Friday's Hull game he kicked goals from all corners of the field in what was an outstanding session, but then he was off the mark on the big night.

"Chris Bridge is very similar. Sometimes the more he practices the worse he gets. Sometimes the less he does the better he gets.

"But if a kick coach is available and it suits the kickers themselves we'll certainly look at it."

It is understood that kicking clinics are currently being run by former St Helens half back Tommy Martyn.

The son of the former Wolves back rower has been the subject of supporter speculation about possibly joining the coaching team at The Halliwell Jones.

But that was news to Cullen, who said: "We've had more than enough changes to cope with behind the scenes during last year and the pre-season, so we're not planning to make any significant changes but we're always looking for new ideas and fresh bodies to freshen up the way we go about our training.

"I believe Tommy is doing some goalkicking clinics at this moment in time.

"We wouldn't rule out anything along those lines if it suits us but we haven't engaged Tommy for kicking coaching clinics. We haven't spoken to him."
