DARYL Powell hailed Des Drummond as “a champion player” as he expressed his sadness at the untimely passing of the legendary former Warrington Wolves winger.
Drummond’s death at the age of 63 was confirmed on Saturday evening as The Wire were preparing to face Wigan Warriors in Stefan Ratchford’s Testimonial match.
His 182 Wire appearances saw him captain the side to Regal Trophy success in 1991 while he also won 24 Great Britain caps.
Powell’s playing career saw him come up against Drummond on several occasions, saying he “felt like he’d been hit by a bus” having been tackled by “Dessy.”
He went on to pay tribute to a man whose popularity transcended rugby league circles.
“I played against Des and he was a champion player. It’s really sad news,” he said.
“He was an iconic figure – I remember catching the ball and him hitting me.
“I remember what that felt like – like I’d been hit by a truck, to be honest.
“He was a fantastic rugby league player and athlete and I want to pass my condolences on to his family and my thanks for his service to this club and to rugby league.”
