ADE Gardner says being appointed to the England coaching staff is “a real honour.”
England head coach Shaun Wane confirmed last week that Gardner – the former St Helens winger who is now Warrington Wolves’ head of performance – would join his backroom team alongside his Warrington colleague, strength and conditioning coach Chris Baron.
As a player, Gardner played for England and Great Britain, representing the former at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup in Australia.
Now, he will focus on helping the team prepare for the 2021 competition on home soil and he believes Wane’s “obsession” with world glory is infectious – even if he has yet to meet him in person.
“It’s a real honour,” Gardner said.
“I was lucky enough to play for England and Great Britain as a player so to be able to be a coach as well is just amazing.
“It’s probably not one of those things you necessarily aspire to, but it was really pleasing to get that call.
“It was a bit weird – I haven’t met Shaun in person yet, only on Microsoft Teams – but he’s very intense and driven.
“He’s obsessed with winning the World Cup and as a coach, you feed off that. The opportunity to work with Chris as well – I can’t tell you how good a coach he is.
“He’s been a great support to me and he’s a good mate of mine now.”
