LET us hope some settled weather improves the lot of Lymm Angling Club members in August following the wettest May, June and July on record.
There is little doubt that the best of this summer's fishing is yet to be enjoyed.
The only worry from a fishery management perspective is the effect of the fish's disjointed spawning processes.
It is perhaps significant that species that spawn very early in the year are feeding and behaving more normally than tench or carp.
Tench and carp action is yet to kick in to its seasonable best. Action for these species has been significantly subdued.
On Lymmvale, tench action has improved slightly with some reasonable catches reported.
Lee McLaughlin landed eight tench to 7lbs 8ozs 0drms during his session last week.
Lee also caught three carp to 16-10-0 but reported losing a much bigger fish, which he managed to get to the net three times before it succeeded in escaping. He estimated the lost fish at between 24lbs and 25lbs.
On the same site Eddie Jones reported a hectic session on the Stockpond, where his six-hour session resulted in him landing three carp to 5lbs and 12 tench up to the 1lb mark. Eddie comments that the Stockpond is the best water he has fished for more than six years.
Crabmill Flash water levels are approaching normal and it is now hoped that the temperatures will stabilise and entice the fish into feeding.
By their nature, fish's instincts drive them to feed to increase their body weight to carry them over the winter months.
This year, due to the weird weather conditions, the window of good feed conditions is condensed and therefore it is likely fish will engage in a frenzied feeding regime, which is good news for anglers. Let us hope this happens sooner rather than later.
Serious river fishing has been all but written off so far but fish are there to be caught, as pointed out by bailiff and club countryside officer Tom Casey.
Travelling light and frequently moving from swim to swim, Tom registered a decent haul from our new stretch of River Dane at Saltersford Farm.
Conditions were not the best and yet it did not prevent Tom finding what he described as some beautiful swims. Unfortunately, as can be expected, other river reports have been scarce.
Moving back to the still waters, Village Pool, Woodside Pool, Grimsditch Mill Pool and Founders Pool have been fishing well for silver fish.
Skimmers, roach, perch, rudd, crucians and small tench are providing good action in the waters where they are stocked.
