Warrington Wizards 20 Leeds Akkies 18.

WIZARDS head coach Danny Lima was a relieved man after Friday's narrow victory over Rugby League Conference National bottom club Leeds Akkies at Wilderspool Stadium.

A 20-8 lead was almost wiped out by two Akkies tries in the final six minutes but the second conversion agonisingly hit an upright to leave second-placed Wizards with the winning points.

Lima said: "That was a very close call. We should have had the game wrapped up a long time before the end.

"We were guilty of forcing the final pass and that gave Leeds the opportunity to get back into the match."

Wizards, whose next scheduled game is at Gateshead Storm on August 18, just did enough in the middle period of Friday's game to keep their unbeaten home league record in tact.

Leeds crossed for two tries before winger Ian Stephenson's inside ball put man of the match Stuart Pirrie over for Wizards, who built a 14-8 half-time cushion on the back of two Mark Roughneen tries.

Wizards struck first in the second half with an Anthony Beckett try.

Akkies put themselves back in the frame with a try from prop Scott Simpson while Wizards hooker Wes Lawton was in the sin bin and produced the dramatic final moments with Varley's second try.
