WARRINGTON Rowing Club's Olivia Oakes was part of the Great Britain junior crew that won the silver medal in the women's senior quadruple sculls race at the National Rowing Championships at the weekend.

Oakes will compete in the same crew at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Italy next month and helped them to second place in Nottingham.

Warrington duo Phil Lyons and Matt Spence agonisingly finished in fourth place in the boys' junior 25 double sculls event, having also finished just outside the medals at the National Schools Regatta in May.

Jenny Pearson missed out on the girls' junior 15 single sculls final on countback after bad weather forced the cancellation of her semi final and the disruption of several other events.

Warrington were slightly disappointed by their results at the championships but head coach Richard Sinnott was philosophical.

He said: The disruption to the event itself merely mirrors the disruption we have experienced all season.

"Many water training sessions on the Mersey have been lost or have been unproductive on account of the severe weather and the effect the weather has had on the river.

"Our athletes have trained hard to prepare and will be disappointed not to have done more.

"For Matt and Phil, particularly, it can only be a matter of time before they make their breakthrough."

Michael Pownall and Tom Pearson will compete for Wales in the Home Countries International Regatta in Ireland this weekend.
