THE FORM of Lymm Angling Club waters is somewhat unpredictable at the moment, similar to what we expect around October time.
Temperatures are unseasonably low, as are the light levels, and that has resulted in a slight downturn in action due to the fish not being as active as they should and therefore not feeding as much as they would in normal conditions.
While the cloud cover is as heavy as it has been, water temperatures are low.
Add to that the effect of the cold rain from storms entering waters and it is not too surprising that the action is a little suppressed.
Hopefully we will have a better August and, if we do, some fish may go into a late spawning with all that is associated with it.
Nevertheless we can be confident that when things do improve the fishing will be excellent as the fish make up for lost time and commence to feed in earnest.
Despite the unseasonable weather, action can still be enjoyed. Roach, rudd, perch and bream seem to be somewhat unaffected by the conditions and some decent bags can be made.
Bream catches have been very good on all the waters that hold them and that was demonstrated by member Chris Oldham, who landed three slabs all weighing well more than 6lbs on Shakerley Mere last Friday.
During his session Chris also landed a common carp of 18lbs, which broke his personal best record.
Rivers are almost impossible to fish at the moment and it is apparently 60 years since we suffered the flooding we have seen during the past few months.
A fishery owner not too far south of here spent a week collecting his fish from his local area following his water's flooding.
Fish were found in garage forecourts, in people's gardens, road gutters, car parks and even in the baths of local residents, where they had placed them to keep them alive. Fish of up to 19lbs were rescued, although many were unfortunately lost.
Our estate maintenance team have been out and about undertaking work on various waters including Founders Pool.
That work is undertaken in a quiet and efficient way by our squad led by Keith Finn, so some things don't stop due to the weather.
The activities of the bailiff system are further examples of that, with bailiffs out and about regardless of the weather.
Even night patrols continue and all the work is done, often thanklessly, on behalf of all the members.
