APPLETON Cricket Club reached the semi finals of the Cheshire Cricket Alliance Cup in a dramatic bowl-out against Trinity on Sunday.

Appleton worked hard to get the game on at Lyons Lane despite the wet conditions but Trinity got off to a flying start, hitting six runs per over.

James Darbyshire made the breakthrough for Appleton, though, and Pete Worrall took wickets in consecutive balls to put the match back in the balance.

But the heavens then opened and the match had to be abandoned and decided by a bowl-out, where bowlers attempt to hit the stumps with no batsman present.

With conditions underfoot becoming perilous, Trinity went 3-1 up in the bowl-out but Chris Tomlinson levelled the scores.

Trinity moved back in front and Worrall needed to hit the wickets from one of his last three attempts.

He hit the target with his last attempt and, after three rounds of sudden death, Danny Oliver clattered the stumps to send Appleton to Langley in the semi finals on Sunday.

Appleton entertain Stalybridge St Pauls in Cheshire Cricket Alliance Division One a day earlier as they bid to continue their push for promotion.
