WARRINGTON Athletics Club's Matt Jackson took the bronze medal in the intermediate boys' 1500m steeplechase at the English Schools Athletics Championship in Birmingham at the weekend.
The 16-year-old Woolston High School pupil, who was representing Cheshire Schools, lowered his personal best by four seconds to 4mins 33.60secs at the Alexander Stadium to bag Warrington's only medal at the prestigious event.
"I feel great," Jackson, who only took up the steeplechase this year, said afterwards.
"In the week I was nervous about it but when you step on the line anything can happen so you have to keep your confidence up.
"I knew I had a chance of a medal, but I didn't come expecting anything. There was a bit of pushing and shoving so it was great to come through and win a medal."
Jackson's training partners also fared well, with Stephen Broadhurst finishing in fourth place in the intermediate 1500m in 4mins 1.83secs after winning his heat, while Danny Cliffe finished fifth in a strong field in the 3000m in 8mins 52.18secs.
Luke Miller-Briggs was fourth in the 100m heats in 11.60secs but a strong headwind restricted him to a time of 11.60secs and denied him a fastest loser qualification place.
Scott McEwan was 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 12.90m, while Jason McGonigle was Warrington's only representative in the senior boys' category, finishing 10th in the 2000m steeplechase in 6mins 23.73secs.
Beth Hicken finished sixth in her heat in the intermediate girls' 200m in 26.10secs before helping Cheshire to victory in their 4x100m relay heat and sixth in a final televised by Sky Sports.
